STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CAREER GOALS

I am currently working on my Masters of Interdisciplinary Studies from Southern Utah University, emphasizing leadership, systems quality leadership and management, and public administration. I am currently working as a Transaction Coordinator for a real estate agent in Cedar City, UT. This part-time job works well for me because it allows me to focus on my interdisciplinary studies. Before working in real estate, I was in human resources for about 15 years. I went back to school to get my Master's degree to stay competitive and marketable in the human resource profession. My goal is to be Vice President of Human Resources for a large company someday. Getting a Master's degree with an emphasis in public administration and leadership will allow me to be an asset to my future employer.

CULMINATION...

My human resources background and the concentrations of leadership and public administration will culminate together as I become a human resource leader and professional for a large organization. All companies need innovative leaders and the knowledge I gained from my MIS degree culminated with my background in human resources, will allow me to be a great asset to my future employer. I will apply my innate leadership traits along with the skills I learned through my studies to help my fellow executives fulfill the vision and goals of the business. In my studies, I have researched W. Edward Deming's ideals and philosophies. I have been to many Deming Conferences that concentrated on quality, leadership and management, and business AIM. It is my goal to implement many of Deming's principles with my future employer.

CAPSTONE PROJECT...

My capstone project will be creating a handbook for human resource professionals in aviation. When working as the human resource manager for a local flight school, there were many FAA rules and regulations for new pilots and mechanics. When I started the position the new hire orientation process was not streamlined.  I had to do a lot of research, self-training to prepare personnel files for FAA and Homeland Security (TSA) audits. All employee files needed to contain proper documentation for credentials, drug abatement program, and TSA training certificates. It would have been helpful to have a manual to refer to help me with the new hire orientation process.

WHY I CHOSE A MIS DEGREE...

I chose to get a Masters of Interdisciplinary studies because I am a non-traditional student and work part-time. I needed the option to take all the classes online, which SUU's MIS program provides that ability. Another reason was that by the time I completed my bachelor's degree, I was a third of the way done for my MIS. I was able to do this because the MIS program offers a "Bridge Program". Participating in this program allowed me to use nine credits from my bachelor's and apply it towards my MIS. I also liked that I could tailor my degree to concentrate on the areas that would positively impact my future employer, which is quality leadership and management.

PLAN FOR SUCCESS...

So far, I have been successful with my MIS studies. I have found time management is the key. If I treat my school work as a full-time job and allot 3-5 hours a day to read my textbooks, articles, and do my assignments, even if I don't have something due for a week, it is manageable and less stressful. I have used this same principle in my bachelor's courses and have found it successful.

Throughout my career in human resources and my continued studies in leadership courses in the MIS Program, I have strengthened my leadership qualities. I am a good judge of character, and I build trust and rapport with employees; I am a problem solver, a great motivator, and a mentor for those struggling in their jobs. I find real satisfaction in identifying an employee's strengths and matching them to a position they will be the most successful in. When an employee finds a good fit within the company, there is more productivity, decreased attrition rate, and higher employee morale. These are the key elements to a successful business, which in turn will be my success too.
